Synopsis
Black Narcissus (2020) is a psychological period drama you can watch online on iFILM, adapted from Rumer Godden's 1939 novel. The Himalayas, 1934. Five Anglican nuns climb to a clifftop palace to open a school and a clinic, and the place starts unmaking them.
Mopu was once called the House of Women, and its walls hold a memory that won't stay buried. Sister Clodagh, played by Gemma Arterton, leads the small order, but thin mountain air, relentless wind and isolation pull at her vows. Mr Dean, the agent who knows the locals, is played by Alessandro Nivola; Aisling Franciosi is the fragile Sister Ruth, whose faith cracks first. Across three episodes the dread builds through quiet — repressed longing, jealousy and a fear that seems to seep from the ground itself.
This was the directing debut of cinematographer Charlotte Bruus Christensen, which explains the painterly framing and heavy, low light. It also marked Diana Rigg's final screen role, as the steely Mother Dorothea. If you prefer slow, nerve-fraying atmosphere over jump scares, this one gets under your skin.
