Synopsis
The Dead Season (1968) is a cult Soviet spy thriller by Savva Kulish, and it's well worth watching online on iFILM. Donatas Banionis stars as a deep-cover intelligence officer, and the film famously opens with a few words from the real-life spy Rudolf Abel.
At an airport in a small European country, a courier linking Western intelligence to a former Nazi criminal, Dr. Hass, turns up dead. On the body is a coded message about buying raw materials for RH — a new chemical weapon Hass first tested on prisoners during the war and is now perfecting in a hidden lab behind the front of a pharmaceutical center. Colonel Ladeynikov is sent to stop him. Since he has never seen Hass's face, Moscow pairs him with Savushkin (Rolan Bykov), an actor who once escaped a camp where the German trialed his gas.
Two strangers in a hostile country, an agent exchange on a bridge, silence where other films would put chases — Kulish shot espionage as draining, nerve-shredding labor rather than spectacle. Banionis's restrained performance set the template for a whole generation of Soviet spy cinema. If you love a slow, intelligent Cold War thriller, this one lands without reservation.
