Synopsis

Telefon (1977) is a Cold War spy thriller you can watch online on iFILM, directed by Don Siegel and led by Charles Bronson. At its center sits a network of Soviet sleeper agents planted across the United States back in the 1950s.

A deranged KGB man steals the notebook that lists them and flees to America. Each agent was conditioned under hypnosis and recalls nothing, until a line of a Robert Frost poem unlocks the order — sending them to blow up a military target and die in the act. Major Borzov is dispatched to stop him, paired with a cool-headed contact played by Lee Remick, while both Moscow and Washington close in.

Siegel made this between Dirty Harry and Escape from Alcatraz, and his lean, no-frills hand shows: the film runs on procedural tension rather than firefights. Donald Pleasence and a young Tyne Daly fill out the cast. It's a chilly, deliberately paced piece for fans of détente-era espionage who prefer dread to gunplay.
