A deranged KGB man steals the notebook that lists them and flees to America. Each agent was conditioned under hypnosis and recalls nothing, until a line of a Robert Frost poem unlocks the order — sending them to blow up a military target and die in the act. Major Borzov is dispatched to stop him, paired with a cool-headed contact played by Lee Remick, while both Moscow and Washington close in.

Siegel made this between Dirty Harry and Escape from Alcatraz, and his lean, no-frills hand shows: the film runs on procedural tension rather than firefights.
