Suzanne Stone wants exactly one thing: to be on television. Not the weather girl at some small-town cable outfit, but a national anchor, and she does not much care what it costs. When her husband Larry starts dreaming of kids and a quiet home life, he becomes an obstacle. Suzanne removes obstacles. She sets her sights on a few bored teenagers from the local high school and goes to work with a smile and a plan.
Van Sant frames the film as a mock documentary, with characters confessing straight to camera, each lying in their own way. Kidman plays the icy charm of pure ambition so precisely that the part won her a Golden Globe. Around her are a young Joaquin Phoenix and Casey Affleck, plus Matt Dillon.
