Synopsis
Atanarjuat: The Fast Runner (2002) is an Arctic drama with a mythic edge that you can watch online on iFILM. Director Zacharias Kunuk shot it on Baffin Island in the Canadian far north, entirely in Inuktitut — the first feature film ever made in the Inuit language.
The story comes from an old Inuit legend, passed down for generations. A small nomadic band hunts seal and walrus across the ice, and tensions over women and leadership slowly tear it apart. Atanarjuat, known for his speed on foot, wins the beautiful Atuat away from the chief's arrogant son. That rivalry curdles into betrayal, a famous naked sprint across open sea ice, and revenge that unfolds over years. The cast — Natar Ungalaaq, Sylvia Ivalu, Peter-Henry Arnatsiaq — are members of the community, not trained actors.
It took the Caméra d'Or for best first feature at Cannes, a rare moment when a Western jury met an indigenous story told from the inside, with no outsider's gaze softening it. Nearly three hours long, patient to the bone, scored mostly by wind and snow. Best suited to viewers hungry for slow, ritual cinema far from the usual Hollywood rhythm. Stream Atanarjuat: The Fast Runner online on iFILM.
