In 1943, deep in the Burmese jungle, thousands of Australian POWs are worked to death on the so-called Death Railway, starved and beaten by their guards. Those months never leave Dorrigo. Neither does Amy (Odessa Young), his uncle's wife, with whom he fell into a forbidden affair before shipping out.

Kurzel isn't chasing battle spectacle; he films memory — how a single summer of love and one year of captivity can hold a man hostage for decades. It is slow, brutal and offers little comfort, made for viewers ready for hard material. Olivia DeJonge and Simon Baker round out the cast.
