Synopsis
The Tenant of Wildfell Hall (1996) is a BBC drama you can watch online on iFILM. Director Mike Barker adapted Anne Brontë's 1848 novel — a book so frank about marriage that it rattled Victorian readers far more than anything her sisters Charlotte or Emily wrote.
Tara Fitzgerald plays Helen Graham, who arrives at a crumbling Elizabethan manor with a small boy and no explanation. The local community decides she must be scandalous. Only young farmer Gilbert Markham (Toby Stephens) keeps pushing past her closed doors — until she hands him her private diary and he reads exactly what she fled. Rupert Graves plays the husband: charming on the surface, quietly destroying everything his wife is.
The three-part serial keeps Anne Brontë's unusual structure, letting Helen tell her own story through years of diary entries rather than filtering it through Gilbert's point of view. For a 1990s BBC period drama, it's notably unsentimental about why women stayed in bad marriages and what it cost to leave.
