Warships are going down across the ocean, and the reports describe something enormous attacking from below. Aronnax, his manservant Conseil, and the harpooner Ned Land sail out to investigate — and end up stranded aboard the Nautilus after their vessel is rammed in the dark. Captain Nemo built his underwater kingdom to escape the world above. He welcomes the scientists' company but will not let them leave.
