Postwar Leningrad — crime has moved in where the state has stepped back. Nina Kolosova, a former intelligence officer, comes home to find her city barely recognizable and her husband, a detective on the anti-bandit squad, shot dead. She does not go to the police. She goes out with a gun. Methodical, accurate, unhurried: bandits and killers start disappearing, and the city grows frightened of whoever is doing it.
