Synopsis
A Little Romance (1979) is a Franco-American romantic comedy you can watch online on iFILM. Director George Roy Hill put Diane Lane in her screen debut opposite Thelonious Bernard as a pair of whip-smart teenagers in Paris — and then cast Laurence Olivier as the eccentric pickpocket who gets tangled up in their runaway adventure.
Lauren is an American girl living in Paris with her flighty socialite mother. She speaks French, reads philosophy, and quotes New Wave directors. Daniel is a working-class French kid who knows every film ever made. Her mother bans the romance. So the two of them slip away to Venice with Julius — a charming old rogue who has told them the legend: kiss in a gondola under the Bridge of Sighs at sunset, when the bells ring, and the love lasts forever.
Olivier won a Golden Globe for the role. Lane was thirteen and already carrying scenes with one of the great actors of the twentieth century — and holding her own. For a romantic comedy from 1979, A Little Romance has aged remarkably well: witty, warm, and without a single cynical bone. Stream it online on iFILM.
