Synopsis
Hideous Kinky (1999) is a Kate Winslet drama you can watch online about a young Englishwoman who abandons grey London and drags her two small daughters to Morocco to find herself. Gillies MacKinnon directed, working from Esther Freud's autobiographical novel.
The year is 1972. Julia, twenty-five and fed up with stuffy British convention and a marriage that fell apart, hauls eight-year-old Bea and six-year-old Lucy into the colour and clamour of Marrakech. The girls revel in their sudden freedom while their mother chases meaning — drawn to Sufi mysticism, scraping by on almost nothing, roaming the country with a charming local acrobat named Bilal, played by Saïd Taghmaoui. The trouble is that a grown woman's quest for herself and her children's need for solid ground keep pulling in opposite directions.
Much of the film is seen through the kids' eyes, and that's its strength: not a travel postcard but an honest look at what a mother's dream of freedom costs the people around her. It's warm, sun-soaked and faintly bittersweet — a treat for fans of early Winslet and slow, road-bound arthouse cinema. Stream Hideous Kinky (1999) online on iFILM.
