Synopsis
The Kentucky Fried Movie (1977) is an American comedy directed by John Landis — watch it online on iFILM. The script came from Jim Abrahams and David and Jerry Zucker, the same trio who would go on to make Airplane! three years later, and this is where they first let loose.
There's no plot. Just a rapid-fire string of sketches: fake commercials, absurd news broadcasts, spoof kung-fu epics, blaxploitation send-ups, disaster film parody, and a shot-by-shot dismantling of anything that played on American television in the 1970s. The pace doesn't let up — roughly a gag every six seconds. For Landis, it was his feature debut, before Animal House and An American Werewolf in London put him on the map.
A lot of the jokes have aged exactly as you'd expect, and that's partly the point. In 1977 this was genuinely subversive — the kind of thing that treated network television as an institution worth ridiculing at full speed. As a time capsule of late-'70s American pop culture and an origin document for the spoof genre, it still holds up as a curiosity. Stream The Kentucky Fried Movie (1977) online on iFILM.
