Synopsis
Scrooge (1951) is a British fantasy drama directed by Brian Desmond Hurst — watch online on iFILM and find what many consider the finest screen version of Charles Dickens' 1843 novella. Alastair Sim plays Ebenezer Scrooge not simply as a miser but as a man whose coldness has a biography: the film takes its time with the flashback sequences, tracing exactly when and why the warmth went out of him.
On Christmas Eve, three spirits visit Scrooge at his counting house. The first drags him back through decades of memory. The second carries him across London to see what the holiday looks like for everyone he has chosen to ignore. The third offers nothing but a cold, wordless glimpse ahead. The script follows Dickens closely but adds enough interior texture that the final transformation feels earned rather than convenient.
Sim's performance won him the BAFTA audience's admiration for decades — the film keeps showing up atop lists of definitive Christmas viewing, black-and-white and all. Stream Scrooge (1951) online on iFILM.
