A young physiotherapist is shot dead at an upscale rural retreat — secure setting, limited guest list, and nobody willing to talk. Then a respected surgeon is murdered and his two teenage daughters disappear: Vera's team is chasing a clock they can't see. An extreme sports enthusiast named Gideon Frane plunges from a Northumberland clifftop in a ball of fire — it might be an accident, but the tangled finances behind him suggest otherwise. The fourth case brings the action into Newcastle's nightlife: an ex-Metropolitan police officer stabbed outside a club, carrying a past that turns out to be far heavier than his record showed.
