The season opens on an island. Ternstone is a wildlife reserve reachable only by boat, home to birds and the rangers who study them — and, it turns out, a suspicious death. Getting there is the first problem; working out what happened among a community with nowhere to flee is the second. From there the cases shift: a body face-down in a river near Thrunton Woods with no identity attached, a student who fell from a derelict university building, and finally a missing teenager buried somewhere on the blanket mire.
