Synopsis
A Midsummer Night's Dream (1999) is a romantic fantasy comedy you can watch online on iFILM, directed by Michael Hoffman with a cast that includes Kevin Kline, Michelle Pfeiffer, Rupert Everett, and a young Christian Bale. Shakespeare's play gets relocated to turn-of-the-century Tuscany — bicycles, gas lamps, and linen suits replace Elizabethan staging, and the result feels more like a warm Italian night than an English woodland.
Two pairs of young Athenians flee into a moonlit forest where the fairy king Oberon and queen Titania are deep in a quarrel of their own. Oberon sends his trickster Puck to dose sleeping lovers with a flower potion that makes them fall for whoever they see first. Affections shuffle with each scene, loyalties reverse, and the confusion is total — while a troupe of bumbling craftsmen rehearse a play next to all of it. Rupert Everett brings a drawling royal boredom to Oberon that keeps the whole chaos at arm's length and makes it funnier for it.
At 116 minutes, the film is fleet without feeling rushed. It works best for viewers who enjoy classic texts made genuinely warm rather than reverently stiff. Stream A Midsummer Night's Dream (1999) online on iFILM.
