Synopsis

Robert Merivel (Robert Downey Jr.) is a gifted young physician who lands at court with an odd appointment — keeper of the king's dogs. To deflect suspicion from his own affairs, Charles (Sam Neill) orders Merivel into a sham marriage with his mistress, Celia, on one condition: don't fall in love. He does. In a single night, titles, estates and royal favor all slip through his fingers.
The fall sends Merivel back to where he began and forces him to relearn what medicine actually means — just as plague and fire close in on London. The cast around Downey is stacked: Meg Ryan, David Thewlis, Hugh Grant, Ian McKellen and Polly Walker. The film picked up two Oscars, for art direction and costume design, and it's that tactile seventeenth-century texture that holds it together more than the romance does.
