Synopsis
Caged (1950) is John Cromwell's women's-prison drama you can watch online on iFILM. A bleak noir set behind bars, it built its reputation on Eleanor Parker's lead performance.
Nineteen-year-old Marie Allen is locked up as an accessory to robbery — really just for sitting in her husband's car during the holdup. Inside waits another world: the sadistic matron Evelyn Harper (Hope Emerson), a worn but unbroken superintendent (Agnes Moorehead), and cellmates who learned long ago that honesty isn't what keeps you alive in here. The film traces, step by step, how prison reshapes a frightened girl into someone else entirely.
Cromwell stages it almost like reportage — no swelling score, just narrow corridors and crowded cells. Parker took the Volpi Cup at Venice for Marie and was up for an Oscar, with two more Academy nods going to Emerson and the writers. It's one of the noirs that spawned the whole women-in-prison genre, yet it plays far more grown-up than its imitators. Stream Caged (1950) online on iFILM.
