Gate (Season 1)

Gate (ゲート, 2015) is a Japanese anime series from A-1 Pictures — watch online on iFILM. A mysterious portal tears open in central Tokyo's Ginza district, flooding the streets with medieval warriors, monsters and fantasy creatures. The Japan Self-Defense Force repels the invasion and, within weeks, dispatches a recon team through the Gate.

Leading that mission is Youji Itami — voiced by Junichi Suwabe — an officer who happens to be a dedicated otaku. On the other side he picks up a high priestess named Rory Mercury, voiced by Nao Toyama, a half-elf girl, and a young mage called Lelei. Two worlds collide: modern firepower against swords and sorcery, chain-of-command bureaucracy against a feudal empire.

Adapted from Takumi Yanai's light novel, Gate ran two twelve-episode seasons across 2015 and 2016. What separates it from standard isekai is the JSDF procedural layer — unit briefings, rules of engagement, political fallout — sitting right alongside the fantasy adventure.
