BLEND-S (Season 1)

BLEND-S (ブレンド・S, 2017) is a Japanese comedy anime series you can watch online on iFILM. Sixteen-year-old Maika Sakuranomiya cannot land a part-time job because her smile looks genuinely threatening to anyone nearby. That same look catches the eye of Dino, the eccentric manager of Café Stile.

At Stile, every waitress performs a fixed character type for the customers — tsundere, little sister, idol. Maika gets assigned the sadist role, which means she has to act cold and domineering while taking orders, all while being flustered and kind-hearted off the clock. Azumi Waki voiced Maika; the directing team included Shigeki Kawai and Takahiko Kyogoku, among others. The joke never really changes, but the anime earns its laughs from the gap between the mask each character wears at work and who they actually are.
