Synopsis
La Terra Trema (1949) is Luchino Visconti's neorealist drama from Italy that you can watch online on iFILM. Filmed entirely in the Sicilian fishing village of Aci Trezza with non-professional actors — the village's own fishermen and their families — it adapts Giovanni Verga's 1881 novel I Malavoglia into a film about class, poverty, and what happens to people who try to break out of a system built against them.
The Valastro family borrows money to buy their own boat and sell their catch independently, cutting out the wholesalers who set prices at will. The logic is sound. It doesn't work. Visconti films the outcome without editorializing — the camera watches what happens when the structure around people is designed to keep them exactly where they are.
It earned jury recognition at the 1948 Venice Film Festival and was conceived as the first of a trilogy that never followed. The Sicilian dialect is so pronounced that Italian subtitles were required at its domestic premiere. At 160 minutes, deliberate and unsparing, this is one of the foundational works of Italian postwar cinema. Stream La Terra Trema (1949) online on iFILM.
