Synopsis
On the Town (1949) is an MGM musical comedy you can watch online on iFILM, co-directed by Stanley Donen and Gene Kelly. Three sailors hit New York City with exactly 24 hours of shore leave and absolutely no intention of wasting a minute of it. Crucially, the production actually filmed on location across Manhattan — a bold move for a Hollywood studio picture in 1949.
Gene Kelly, Frank Sinatra, and Jules Munshin tear through the city in search of romance. Each finds his match: an anthropologist, a cab driver, and the subway's "Miss Turnstiles" — Ann Miller taps her way through the Museum of Natural History in one of the film's standout sequences. The score came from Leonard Bernstein, years before West Side Story.
For a studio musical of its era, On the Town moves fast and keeps the sentiment in check. It picked up an Academy Award for Best Scoring of a Musical Picture and holds up remarkably well. Stream On the Town (1949) online on iFILM.
