Synopsis
The Innocent (L'innocente, 1976) is Luchino Visconti's final film, and you can watch it online on iFILM. The Italian period drama about a marriage poisoned by pride reached screens only after the director's death.
Count Tullio Hermil calls himself a man free of prejudice: he keeps a mistress, Teresa, while ignoring his gentle wife Giuliana. The moment she takes a lover of her own, his fine talk of freedom curdles into jealousy and a need to control her. Giancarlo Giannini plays an aristocrat who prizes his vanity above any feeling; Laura Antonelli is the wife he overlooked for too long. The ending is cold and unsparing.
Adapted from a novel by Gabriele D'Annunzio and set in turn-of-the-century Italy, the film carries Visconti's trademark eye for light, fabric and interiors. It is a master's farewell — sensual, ironic and merciless toward its own hero. It suits anyone drawn to European classics and slow dramas about morality and reckoning.
