Synopsis
Tom Jones (1963) is a raucous British period comedy you can watch online on iFILM, directed by Tony Richardson from Henry Fielding's 1749 novel. Albert Finney plays the title character — a foundling raised in a country squire's house, constitutionally incapable of staying out of trouble and equally incapable of being disliked for long.
Tom is in love with Sophie Western, played by Susannah York, but the road between them runs through duels, country inns, and a remarkable number of women who find him impossible to refuse. Hugh Griffith as Sophie's blustering father nearly walks off with the film. Richardson shot it with a restless camera and had Finney address the audience directly — a formal trick that felt genuinely bold in 1963 and still gives the film its odd, mischievous energy.
At the BAFTAs and Oscars that year the film cleaned up: four Academy Awards including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Adapted Screenplay. It helped launch what became the British New Wave of cinema and remains the kind of historical comedy that doesn't feel dusty. Stream Tom Jones (1963) on iFILM.
