Synopsis
Paranoiac (1963) is a Hammer psychological thriller you can watch online on iFILM, directed by Freddie Francis and shot in stark black-and-white.
The Ashby estate is falling apart. The parents died in a plane crash years ago, their son Tony took his own life not long after, and now the property belongs to two survivors: Simon, an alcoholic with debts and an inheritance nearly in reach, and his sister Eleanor, dismissed by everyone around her as mentally unstable. Then a man arrives at the door claiming to be the dead Tony — alive, back, and home.
Francis was primarily a cinematographer before he directed, and it shows: the film works through confinement and shadow rather than explicit horror. Oliver Reed, barely in his twenties, gives Simon a coiled and unpredictable energy that sits somewhere between menace and desperation — and that tension is what makes Paranoiac still worth watching sixty years on.
