Synopsis

Paradise Now (2005) is a Palestinian war drama you can watch online on iFILM, directed by Hany Abu-Assad and co-produced across Germany, France and the Netherlands. It took the Golden Globe for Best Foreign Language Film and competed for the Oscar in the same category — the first Palestinian film to do so.

Khaled and Said are childhood friends working as mechanics in Nablus, on the Israeli-occupied West Bank. One day they receive orders: travel to Tel Aviv and carry out a double suicide bombing. The film follows the final 24 hours. One of them is certain, or at least performs certainty. The other is not. Both strap on the explosive belts and wait for the moment.

Abu-Assad built his script around the specific, not the symbolic — two ordinary men rather than a thesis about conflict. That narrowness is the film's most uncomfortable quality. It refuses the viewer the distance of a political argument and forces a close look at how a person arrives at that door. Stream Paradise Now (2005) online on iFILM.
