The Band's Visit

"The Band's Visit" (ביקור התזמורת, 2007) is Eran Kolirin's gentle tragicomedy, available to watch online on iFILM. Eight musicians from an Egyptian police orchestra, decked out in powder-blue dress uniforms, land in Israel to play the opening of an Arab cultural center. Nobody comes to meet them. They mangle the name of the town, board the wrong bus, and end up somewhere else entirely.

By nightfall the band is stranded in a tiny desert settlement with no hotel and no bus until morning. Dina (Ronit Elkabetz), who runs the local café, takes them in — sharp-tongued, weary, surprisingly kind. The stiff bandleader Tawfiq (Sasson Gabai) and his men scatter among strangers' homes for one night. Almost nothing "happens": awkward dinners, halting English, a song beside a payphone, silences that say more than dialogue does.

That restraint is the whole point. A film about Arabs and Israelis that sidesteps politics and simply watches people who need a place to sleep. It picked up prizes at Cannes, swept Israel's Ophir Awards, and later became a Broadway musical that took home ten Tonys. Perfect for anyone who loves quiet cinema about warmth between strangers.
