Synopsis
City of Women (La città delle donne, 1980) is Federico Fellini's surrealist comedy you can watch online on iFILM. Marcello Mastroianni plays Snaporaz, a middle-aged man who steps off a train to follow an attractive stranger and ends up stranded at a hotel full of women attending a feminist conference — where he is very much not welcome.
What follows is less a plot than a fever dream. Snaporaz wanders through corridors, forests, ballrooms, and fantasies, encountering women who mock him, seduce him, ignore him, or put him on trial. Fellini isn't making a polemic. He's mapping the anxiety of a man who built his identity around a world that's rearranging itself without asking him first.
At 148 minutes the film sprawls, but that's the point — it's a labyrinth, not a story. Mastroianni pulls off something tricky: playing the butt of the joke with enough dignity that you almost feel sorry for the guy. Stream City of Women (1980) in full online on iFILM.
