Ghost in the Shell: The New Movie
Synopsis
Ghost in the Shell: The New Movie (攻殻機動隊 新劇場版, 2015) is a Japanese animated sci-fi film you can watch online on iFILM, co-directed by Kazuya Nomura and Kazuchika Kise as the theatrical conclusion to the Ghost in the Shell: Arise series. Post-war Japan has been rebuilt around cybernetics: human memory and identity now flow through a shared network of "Ghosts," and the worst threat anyone faces isn't a bullet but code that rewrites who you are.
When a virus called Fire-Starter jumps through the system and steers an infected cyborg to assassinate the Prime Minister, Major Motoko Kusanagi — voiced by Maaya Sakamoto — leads Section 9 into the investigation. Layer by layer, the case opens into government conspiracy and figures who were never supposed to exist.
As a capstone for the Arise storyline it works cleanly, but it's aimed squarely at viewers already inside the franchise. Come in cold and the political architecture may lose you; arrive knowing the characters and it clicks. Either way the animation holds up.
