Synopsis
American Me (1992) is Edward James Olmos's directing debut — a crime drama spanning three generations of a Mexican-American family, and you can watch it online on iFILM. Olmos also stars as Santana, a gang leader who runs the criminal operation inside Folsom Prison for eighteen years before his release drops him back into an East Los Angeles neighborhood that has barely changed.
The film covers the full arc: how Santana's family was shaped by wartime displacement, how street life claimed him as a teenager, and how the prison system finished the job of turning him into something the streets now fear. Olmos shot portions of the film inside the real Folsom with inmates as extras, and spent over a decade researching the project through interviews with former members of the Mexican Mafia.
