Synopsis
A Stranger Among Us (1992) is Sidney Lumet's crime thriller, available to watch online in good quality. NYPD detective Emily Eden takes a missing-jeweler case inside a tight-knit Hasidic community in Brooklyn — and goes undercover, living among the Orthodox to draw out a killer.
Melanie Griffith plays a cop who usually settles things with a gun and a smart mouth. Now she lands in a world where every gesture has a rule: you don't touch a man who isn't your husband, the week bends around the Sabbath, faith decides what gets said out loud. Emily learns it all on the fly, and finds herself drawn to Ariel (Eric Thal), a future rebbe who talks about Kabbalah the way other people talk about being in love. The stolen-diamond plot turns out to be only the shell. Watch for Mia Sara and a very young James Gandolfini in supporting parts.
Lumet built half his career on New York cops and guilty consciences, but here he swaps the procedural for a collision between two incompatible ways of living. The mystery is thinner than the heroine's spiritual curiosity — which is exactly why this works for anyone in the mood for a slow, quiet detective story with no shootouts in the frame.
