Synopsis
Best Defense (1984) is a military comedy you can watch online on iFILM, directed by Willard Huyck. Two stories, two wars, one half-built tank.
Wylie (Dudley Moore) is a slapdash weapons engineer trying to perfect the targeting system for a new battle tank when a classified disk lands in his lap and brings a pack of people after it. Two years later, out in the Kuwaiti desert, Lieutenant Landry (Eddie Murphy) takes that same unfinished machine into combat and finds out exactly how its bugs behave under fire. The two threads run on separate tracks and barely meet.
Murphy's role was bolted on after the main shoot wrapped — the studio wanted his rising-star name on the poster — and his scattered scenes carry much of the picture. Kate Capshaw plays Wylie's wife; George Dzundza turns up as a colleague. It's a lopsided thing, closer to absurd army farce than tight comedy, worth a look mainly for fans tracking Murphy's early-'80s run. Stream Best Defense (1984) online on iFILM.
