Synopsis
The Four Feathers (1939) is Zoltan Korda's British adventure drama, free to watch online in good quality. The year is 1898. On the eve of his regiment shipping out to Sudan, young officer Harry Faversham resigns his commission — and three brother officers mail him white feathers, the old mark of a coward.
A fourth feather comes from his fiancée, Ethne. Harry says nothing in his defense. Instead he sails to Egypt alone, disguises himself as a mute Sangali tribesman, and works his way into the worst of the Mahdist war — to the same friends who branded him, now pinned down and in danger. John Clements plays Harry; Ralph Richardson is his rival and friend John Durrance, slowly going blind under the desert sun; June Duprez is Ethne.
Shot in early three-strip Technicolor, the desert light and the cavalry charge at Omdurman still look startling for a film this old. A.E.W. Mason's novel has been adapted again and again, but Korda's take remains the one people come back to — less sermon about duty, more the stubbornness of one man who decided that other people's verdict was not the final word.
