Synopsis
Wuthering Heights (1939) is William Wyler's landmark Hollywood drama you can watch online on iFILM, starring Laurence Olivier and Merle Oberon in an adaptation of Emily Brontë's novel. Heathcliff grows up at the Yorkshire estate as a foundling taken in by the Earnshaw family, falls for foster sister Cathy, and watches her choose the respectable Edgar Linton instead — because class and money are facts she cannot argue away.
Heathcliff vanishes, returns years later with wealth and a cold plan. He works through the people who humiliated him one by one, and Olivier plays the obsession not as rage but as something more unsettling: patient, architectural. Cathy's choice haunts every scene between them long after she has made it.
Cinematographer Gregg Toland shot the film — the same Toland who would lens Citizen Kane two years on — and the visual texture shows it. Wyler picked up an Academy Award nomination for direction, and the film competed for Best Picture among its eight Oscar nods. Seventy-some years on, it remains the standard against which other Brontë adaptations are measured. Stream Wuthering Heights (1939) online on iFILM.
