Synopsis
Maze (2017) is a fact-based prison thriller you can watch online on iFILM. Irish director Stephen Burke reconstructs what unfolded on 25 September 1983 behind the H-Blocks outside Belfast, when nearly forty IRA inmates walked out of a wing nobody thought could be cracked.
At the heart of it is prisoner Larry Marley (Tom Vaughan-Lawlor), who spends months working the plan from the inside. To make it move, he gets close to a warder named Gordon Close (Barry Ward), and an uneasy, dangerous bond grows between two men who are meant to be enemies. The conflict in Northern Ireland isn't backdrop here — it's the air both of them breathe.
Burke keeps it tight and small-scale, trading action set-pieces for silence, nerves and the clock ticking down to the break. That night went on record as the largest escape from a European jail since the Second World War. If you'd rather have a taut true-story drama than a loud action film, this is worth your time.
