Synopsis
The Devil's Eye (Djävulens öga, 1960) is a Swedish comedy from Ingmar Bergman you can watch online on iFILM. The whole thing springs from an old proverb: a virgin's chastity is a sty in the Devil's eye. To rid himself of the irritation, the lord of Hell dispatches Don Juan back to Earth on one task — seduce a pastor's twenty-year-old daughter, Britt-Marie, before her wedding day.
The legendary rake has barely a day and a night. But for the first time in three centuries the smooth seducer finds himself falling for his target, and the scheme unravels from the inside. Jarl Kulle plays Don Juan, Bibi Andersson the sweet but far-from-helpless Britt-Marie, and Stig Järrel a charmingly weary Devil. Bergman — the man behind The Seventh Seal and Wild Strawberries — is clearly clowning around here: the black-and-white film is built as a teasing parable, complete with a "lecturer" who steps in to narrate like a stage host.
This is light, mischievous Bergman wedged between two of his heavyweight dramas — no existential gloom, just sly comedy about lust, vanity and who is really seducing whom. It is for anyone who wants the master in a playful mood rather than wrestling with God. Stream The Devil's Eye (1960) online on iFILM.
