Felix (Duvall) has been a hermit for thirty years. The town has forgotten what he did, and he has never bothered to correct the rumors. Now he wants to rent a mule, buy a plot, and invite the whole county to hear the truth — before he is no longer around to tell it. Funeral director Frank Quinn (Murray) smells a business opportunity; the woman from Felix's past (Spacek) smells something else entirely.
