Synopsis
Nocturama (2016), directed by Bertrand Bonello, is a French-Belgian-German thriller you can watch online on iFILM. At 130 minutes, it splits cleanly into two movements — a city, then a store, separated by an act of mass destruction.
The first half follows a loose group of young Parisians from different backgrounds moving through the city on a single day. They barely interact. Then, in near-silence, bombs go off across Paris. The second half traps them overnight in a grand nineteenth-century department store where they wait, killing time by trying on luxury clothes and playing music. Bonello strips away motive, ideology, and consequence — what remains is a long look at faces. Finnegan Oldfield and Adèle Haenel lead the cast.
The film was pulled from French release after the Nice attacks and remains genuinely difficult to place — not a thriller in any conventional sense, not a political essay either. It is more interested in what boredom looks like inside a generation than in explaining what pushed them. Unsettling, formally precise, and easy to get wrong. Stream Nocturama (2016) online on iFILM.
