Synopsis
The Beast (La Bête, 2024) is a French science-fiction drama you can watch online on iFILM, written and directed by Bertrand Bonello, loosely drawn from Henry James's 1903 story "The Beast in the Jungle." Léa Seydoux and George MacKay star in a film that runs 146 minutes and refuses to hurry.
The premise: in a near future where intense emotions have been classified as a social hazard, Gabrielle agrees to purify her DNA through a procedure that replays her past lives. In each one — Belle Époque Paris, 2014 Los Angeles, the antiseptic future — she encounters the same man. The pull between them is immediate. So is the dread. MacKay's Louis feels like someone she has always known, and that familiarity turns out to be the most frightening thing about him.
Bonello layers the three timelines against each other rather than resolving them cleanly — the film is less a love story than a study of how a single emotional pattern repeats across lifetimes without ever finding its release. Stream The Beast (2024) online on iFILM.
