Synopsis
Demonlover (2002) is Olivier Assayas's ice-cold corporate thriller, and you can watch it online on iFILM. Diane (Connie Nielsen) works for a French conglomerate while secretly feeding intel to its rival.
What's on the table is the distribution rights to a 3-D adult manga studio, and two web firms will do anything to grab the deal. Diane schemes her way in, only to realize she's the one being played — rival operatives close in, the stakes climb, and the line between business warfare and outright violence dissolves. The deeper it goes, the harder it gets to tell a transaction from a trap, or either one from a hallucination.
Assayas made a deliberately disorienting film about corporations, sex and the early internet fusing into a single predatory machine, scored with menace by Sonic Youth and rounded out by Chloë Sevigny and Gina Gershon in sharp supporting turns. It splits audiences down the middle: some can't stand its glacial detachment, others read it as a prophecy of the digital age. Stream Demonlover online on iFILM.
