Synopsis
Non-Fiction (Doubles vies, 2018) is a French comedy-drama you can watch online on iFILM, written and directed by Olivier Assayas. Guillaume Canet plays Alain, a Paris publisher who reads the new manuscript from one of his best-known authors and immediately spots the problem: the novel is auto-fiction, and its cast of characters is drawn from life — including people Alain knows rather too well.
The book describes an affair between the author and a minor celebrity. Alain's wife Selena, a celebrated stage actress played by Juliette Binoche, has also read it and thinks it's extraordinary. The gap between their reactions drives the film. Around this literary standoff, Assayas layers a very contemporary argument: about e-books versus print, about whether turning people into material is a right or a betrayal, about couples who speak fluently about culture while saying almost nothing about themselves.
The film runs almost entirely on dialogue, and the conversations are genuinely sharp. It rewards patience — this is French intellectual comedy in the tradition of Rohmer, and it knows it. Stream Non-Fiction (2018) in full on iFILM.
