Synopsis
Ashes of Time (東邪西毒, 1994) is Wong Kar-wai's fractured wuxia art film, available to watch online on iFILM. Leslie Cheung plays Ouyang Feng, a man who retreated to the Western Desert after a rejected love and now brokers contracts between killers and clients. Loosely drawn from Jin Yong's martial-arts novels, though Wong stripped out the genre mechanics and kept only the wound.
The film is structured as a series of encounters, each one circling the same theme: what rejection does to a person over time. A woman offers only an egg as payment to avenge her brother. A swordsman is losing his sight but still takes the job. An old friend turns up still carrying a torch for a woman who married someone else. Tony Leung Ka-fai, Tony Leung Chiu-wai, Maggie Cheung and Brigitte Lin form an ensemble that reads now like a roll call of Hong Kong cinema's golden era.
Christopher Doyle shot it — every frame the texture of dry sand and fading gold. This is not a film about sword fights; it is about memory and the distance people put between themselves and what they cannot have. Wong re-edited the whole thing for a 2008 re-release, tightening the cut he had lived with for fourteen years. Stream Ashes of Time (1994) online on iFILM.
