Synopsis
Friendly Persuasion (1956) is a William Wyler drama you can watch online on iFILM. The setting is Indiana, 1862, with the Civil War grinding on. The Birdell family are Quakers running a farm, trying to honor a faith that forbids violence — until the fighting reaches their own front gate.
Jess (Gary Cooper) heads the household alongside his wife Eliza (Dorothy McGuire), raising their children inside the strict code of the Meeting. The world outside keeps testing that code. Eldest son Josh, played by a young Anthony Perkins, wrestles with whether he has any right to pick up a rifle while Confederate riders burn the neighbors' fields. Wyler never preaches; he lingers on ordinary days, a county fair, the parlor organ Eliza deems sinful, and lets each character walk toward a choice of their own.
The film took the top prize at the 1957 Cannes Film Festival and drew six Academy Award nominations. It's a rare war picture where the real battle is one of conscience — whether you can stay true to yourself when everyone around you is killing. Warm, unhurried, and quietly grown-up.
