Synopsis
The Little Foxes (1941) is William Wyler's drama, well worth watching online in good quality. Bette Davis plays Regina Giddens, a cold Southern beauty who will walk over anyone for money. The year is 1900, the setting the American South, and the Hubbard clan has its eye on a fortune to be made from a cotton mill.
Getting into the deal takes capital, and the only money belongs to Regina's gravely ill husband Horace. When he refuses to bankroll her brothers' scheme, Regina turns to lies, blackmail and icy patience. Watching it all is her daughter Alexandra, who slowly grasps what her family is really made of.
The film grew out of Lillian Hellman's Broadway play, and cinematographer Gregg Toland shot it with the same deep-focus look he gave Citizen Kane that very year. Nine Oscar nominations, the screen debut of Teresa Wright, and one of Davis's nastiest performances: she never raises her voice, which only makes Regina scarier.
