Synopsis
Night Train to Lisbon (2013) is a literary mystery drama you can watch online on iFILM. Raimund Gregorius, a buttoned-up Swiss teacher of ancient languages, pulls a stranger off a bridge before she can jump. She vanishes, leaving her coat behind — and in its pocket, a slim book by a Portuguese doctor. A few pages in, Gregorius walks out of his classroom and boards a train south.
Jeremy Irons plays the professor whose grey routine cracks open overnight. In Lisbon he traces the author, Amadeu de Prado: a physician and poet who joined the resistance against the Salazar dictatorship. The past arrives in flashbacks — old friendships, a betrayal, one woman two men could not share. Mélanie Laurent, August Diehl, Bruno Ganz and Christopher Lee fill out both the rebels of the 1970s and the people who survived them.
Danish director Bille August adapted Pascal Mercier's bestselling novel at the pace of a slow train, all rainy streets and unfinished questions. It's a film for anyone who has wondered whether a stranger's story might matter more than their own. Stream Night Train to Lisbon (2013) online on iFILM.
