Synopsis
Dinner for One (1963) is a British comedy short you can watch online on iFILM — and quite possibly the most-broadcast single piece of television in history. Directed by Heinz Dunkhase for West German public broadcaster NDR, it runs eighteen minutes and has aired in Germany every New Year's Eve for over six decades.
Miss Sophie is turning ninety and insists on dining with her four closest friends. All four are long dead. Her butler James — Freddie Frinton at his physical best — has to impersonate every guest in turn, raising a glass each time. By the fish course he's unsteady; by dessert, the floor is a genuine obstacle. May Warden plays Miss Sophie with serene composure, which makes the escalating disaster next to her even funnier.
