Synopsis
Murder by Death (1976) is a comedy whodunnit you can watch online on iFILM. Eccentric millionaire Lionel Twain summons the world's five greatest detectives to his gloomy mansion and dangles a million dollars to whoever solves a murder before midnight.
Neil Simon wrote the script as one long send-up of detective fiction. Each guest is a thinly disguised parody — Sidney Wang riffs on Charlie Chan, Milo Perrier on Poirot, Jessica Marbles on Miss Marple, Sam Diamond on the hard-boiled gumshoes. Add a blind butler, a deaf-mute cook, rooms that rotate and walls that move, and the case collapses into glorious nonsense.
The cast is the real draw here: Peter Sellers, Alec Guinness, David Niven, Maggie Smith and Peter Falk, with novelist Truman Capote making his screen debut as the sadistic host.
