Ann Lee was a weaver from Manchester. In 1774, facing imprisonment and public hostility in England, she crossed the Atlantic with a small band of believers and settled in upstate New York. What she built there was unlike anything around it: shared property, a woman in spiritual authority, worship conducted through ecstatic song and communal dance. Her brother William (Lewis Pullman) stays by her side as witness and protector. The story is narrated by Mary Partington (Thomasin McKenzie) — a voice from within the community Ann founded, looking back.
