Marshal Jake Wade once broke outlaw Clint Hollister out of prison to settle an old score. Hollister didn't see it as settled. He tracks Jake to his quiet town, grabs the fiancée, and lays out one demand: lead the gang to where the robbery loot is buried. Robert Taylor plays Wade as a man who crossed over to law and order and would like very much to stay there. Richard Widmark's Hollister makes the mountain ride a study in barely contained menace.
