Synopsis
The Return of the Musketeers (1989) is a swashbuckling adventure comedy you can watch online on iFILM. Twenty years on, the aging quartet pulls its swords back out at the queen's command.
The year is 1649. D'Artagnan is still stuck as a lieutenant, Porthos is rich and bored stiff, Aramis has taken holy orders, and Athos raises a clever son while keeping his distance from the bottle. Cardinal Mazarin drags them into high politics once more: Cromwell's revolution is tearing England apart, and the musketeers are sent to rescue King Charles. On their heels rides Justine, daughter of Milady de Winter, sworn to avenge the mother they helped destroy.
Director Richard Lester closes out his musketeer trilogy with most of the old faces back in place: Michael York, Oliver Reed, Frank Finlay, joined by Christopher Lee and Kim Cattrall. The tone is farcical, the fencing cheerfully rowdy, and the script draws on Dumas's novel Twenty Years After. A breezy costume romp for anyone raised on the older musketeer films.
